HOFFMAN ESTATES — The Brother Rice boys bowling team emerged with the title at the CCL Championship Tournament on Saturday, defeating St. Laurence 205-190 in the third game of the best-of-three Baker format finals.

The eventual champs won Game 1 of the finals 171-168, but lost the second game 164-148, setting up a showdown in Game 3 at Poplar Creek Bowl.

“We focused on that last game,” Brother Rice coach Tim Daniher said. “In Baker play, anything can happen. We were fortunate enough to beat a good St. Laurence team.”

Brother Rice reached the finals after finishing second to St. Laurence by a 1,150-1,075 pin count in the Baker format semifinals. St. Patrick (1,063) and Mount Carmel (981) were left behind after reaching the semis.

St. Laurence finished first in regulation play, edging Brother Rice 4,661-4,602 in the typical league format. Mount Carmel (4,530) and St. Patrick (4,522) placed third and fourth.

Marist (4,446), Notre Dame (4,334), Gordon Tech (4,005) and St. Joseph (3,923) rounded out the top eight.

Senior Joe Zaccagnini (906) led the Dons, finishing 16th overall in regulation, with freshman Charlie Allen (904) right behind him in 17th. Notre Dame senior Mike Canova (894) finished 21st.

Pacing the Chargers was senior Josh Grayson, who placed 11th with 925. St. Joseph senior Sam Corsino (829) and junior Mike Wolthusen (820) ended up 32nd and 33rd.

Loyola coach Chuck Halfpap received CCL Coach of the Year honors during the meet. The Ramblers were led by sophomore Joshua Kilian, who placed 49th with 744.
