Exactly two weeks after a hair salon in Skokie was robbed at gunpoint, a second Skokie hair salon was robbed Thursday, police said.
Shortly after noon, a white male, age 35 to 45, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 1 inch, weighing 200 to 230 pounds and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, entered Supercuts, 3539 Dempster St., displayed a black handgun and demanded money, police said.
Authorities say the robber made off with $345 and fled in an unknown direction, and there were no injuries.
According to police, the victim recognized the suspect from a community alert recently released to all local hair salons due to previous robberies in December and January in Bensenville, Lombard, Skokie, Niles, Glen Ellyn, Morton Grove and Chicago.
The Skokie Police Department said it is pursuing all investigative leads. At this time, there is no further information on the suspect, they said.
Witnesses provided a similar description of the suspect in the Dec. 27 robbery of Skokie’s Hair Cuttery, 9442 Skokie Blvd.
Police said a man carrying a backpack entered the Hair Cuttery and approached the register to buy shampoo. When the cashier rang up the purchase, police said, the suspect produced a black handgun from his backpack and twice demanded that she give him money.
The cashier, according to police, placed $110 inside the backpack. He was last seen walking northbound in an alley on the 9500 block of Skokie Boulevard.
In the community alert after the first Skokie robbery, the suspect was described as male, white, between 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 200 to 230 pounds. He was also described as wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans, a gray knitted hat, sunglasses during the day with a scarf covering his face, dark gloves and gray or blue tennis shoes while carrying a dark colored shoulder bag.
Authorities have advised that those who encounter the suspect comply with his demands. If there is opportunity, they said, witnesses should call 911, and if they can’t talk to an operator, they are advised to put down the phone and leave the line open.
Anyone with information or knowledge about the robberies should contact the Skokie Police Department’s Investigation Division at (847) 982-5958.
The Crime Tip Hotline is also now available for residents to leave non-emergency anonymous information. The Crime Tip Hotline number is (847) 933-TIPS (8477) and is available 24 hours per day. More information can be found at www.skokie.org.~.
