An autopsy is scheduled for today (Feb. 3) on a body found in a small forested area in Park Ridge.

The heavily decomposed body of a white, “heavy-set” male was discovered shortly before 3 p.m., Feb. 2 by a man walking his dog through a wooded area at the northeast corner of Riverside Drive and Oakton Street, Park Ridge Police said. The body was slumped over a log and was found roughly 50 to 100 yards from Riverside Drive, said Park Ridge Police Lt. Duane Mellema.

The Police Department is describing the man’s death as “suspicious” and investigators are not certain how long the body may have been in the woods.

“The body’s badly decomposed and it’s not really identifiable,” Mellema said.

The man’s approximate age is also not known, police said.

Mellema said the Park Ridge Police Department has “a couple” of open missing persons cases, but he would not comment as to whether any are suspected of being the man found in the woods.

“(Investigators) want to make sure there’s a positive identification first,” he said.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death and the man’s identity will be conducted by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
