NILES — An argument over street parking ended with a felony hate crime charge for a 55-year-old Niles man who stands accused of using a Hispanic ethnic slur against his neighbor and the man’s adult daughter, Niles police said.
Michael Green, of 7908 Octavia Ave., was also charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct in the alleged Feb. 22 incident which occurred at 7:30 a.m. outside his home.
According to police, a 45-year-old neighbor of Green’s reported that Green became verbally abusive after the neighbor parked his car on the street. When the neighbor’s daughter exited their residence, Green allegedly made derogatory statements of a sexual nature to the 21-year-old woman and used the Hispanic slur to refer to her and her father. Green also allegedly threatened to place a bomb inside his neighbor’s vehicle, police reported.
Police said the neighbor reported that over the last two years Green has frequently made “racially-motivated comments” to his family, including statements that he should not be living on the block because of his ethnic background.
Green reportedly admitted to police that he may have provoked the incident and that he did use derogatory language and slurs against the residents. He denied stating that he was going to place a bomb in the man’s vehicle, police said.
Green’s next court date is scheduled for March 11.
