Maine South student charged in hallway fight

PARK RIDGE — A video of a fight involving two Maine South High School students is creating a buzz around the community after it was reportedly posted on a social networking site and then shared on the television news.
Park Ridge Deputy Police Chief Lou Jogmen said a 20- to 30-second video clip of two girls involved in a physical altercation in a hallway of the Park Ridge high school was posted on Facebook following the incident which occurred around 3:30 p.m., Dec. 5. The fight was reportedly taped by a student and one of the teens involved was identified by police as the aggressor.
Jogmen said the victim, a 14-year-old Niles girl, reported the altercation to the school dean who contacted Maine South’s school resource officer. Police later charged a 15-year-old Park Ridge girl with battery and she is awaiting a petition to juvenile court, Jogmen said.
The police report did not indicate if the victim sustained any injuries, nor did it state what triggered the altercation, he added.
In a television news interview the victim’s father reported that his daughter suffered a concussion.
Though the fight has received attention from the television media, Jogmen said there is something positive to note in the video: another student stepping in to break up the fight while both girls were on the ground.
“To me, I think that is the bigger story,” he said. “(The student) demonstrated gallantry and showed that there are good kids out there.”
Physical altercations are not unusual events on Park Ridge’s two high school campuses and several resulted in arrests this year as weekly crime incidents provided by the Police Department have shown.
Maine Township High School District 207 released a statement regarding the alleged Dec. 5 battery, indicating that Maine South was aware of a verbal confrontation between the two girls in September and school officials had advised the students to report any future incidents to administrators.
“South administrators will address any school-based disciplinary measures that are warranted from the Dec. 5 incident,” the statement read. “All reports of bullying within District 207 schools are investigated.”
