Assyrian Cultural Celebration
Children of War: Voices of Iraqi Refugees – A book discussion, 12:30-1:45 p.m. Feb. 29 (Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Room P103). Attend a forum about author Deborah Eillis’ book that provides first-hand accounts of children displaced by war in Iraq.
Assyrians in Chicago History, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. March 1 (Room P103, Skokie campus). Homer Ashurian, executive director of Chicago’s Assyrian Universal Alliance Foundation, and Vasili Shoumanov, author of Assyrians in Chicago, shed light on the role Assyrians have played in the Windy City.

Sponsored by the Office of Student Recruitment and Outreach, the tour of Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., will feature information about admission, career and transfer programs, financial aid, student services, and extracurricular activities. Oakton faculty, administrators, staff, and students will be available to answer questions.
Oakton offers associate degrees and certificate programs for students planning to move on to four-year colleges or universities, as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the college is recognized by the Illinois Community College Board and is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges.

Examine Jewish/French culture
Take a closer look at Jewish and French culture and the environment by enrolling in new courses offered by the Emeritus Program at Oakton.
Shadows of Understanding: The Holocaust in Performance (HUM E22-71) – The Holocaust has seared itself into world culture through films, plays, and other performances. Confront new meanings and old truth about the persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime through the scheduled screenings of performances including “Jacob the Liar,” “A Film Unfinished,” and “God on Trial.” Six-week course meets 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Wednesdays starting March 7. Course fee is $100.
The Topsy-Turvy History of France: Lots of Louis, Two Napoleons, and One DeGaulle (HIS E20-71) – Explore the turbulent political history and culture of France along with the country’s contribution to culture. Five-week course meets 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays starting March 7. Course fee is $82.
New Ways of Mapping the Earth (HIS E42-71) – From Google Earth to global positioning systems, computer advances have changed how the geographic environment is navigated and interpreted. Lean how geographic information systems are used to track missiles, diseases, crime, and more. One-week course meets 1-2:30 p.m. March 9. Course fee is $20.

All registrants will be charged an $8 non-refundable processing fee at the time of registration. However, students who register online will only be charged once per semester for an unlimited number of courses. Those registering in person, by mail, or fax will be charged an $8 fee with each registration form.

Introduction to Remodeling As a Business (TEC B09-01) – Discover opportunities in the remodeling industry. Four-week course meets 7-9 p.m. Thursdays starting March 1 at Evanston Township High School. Course fee is $99.
Savvy Home Buying in This Market (REL E19-01) – Become a confident home-buyer by gaining insight into the maze of hidden costs. Discover money-saving and money-making tips, especially for short-sale and foreclosed properties. Two-session course meets 6-9 p.m. March 6 and 8 at Glenbrook South High School, 4000 W. Lake Ave., Glenview. Course fee is $55.
